Aelar Manfeller, like many of his house,
presents a distinct appearance from other wood
elves. His hair is light in color, and his bluegreen
irises fade into the whites of his eyes, a
reminder of his house’s eladrin ancestors. Years
of martial training have given him a sturdy
frame. He prefers hides and leathers for his
dress, though he finds it hard to resist a colorful
In person, Aelar is affable, fond of stories, and
quick to laugh. He is also quick to get in
trouble, tending to confuse action with heroics.
Having never been entirely comfortable among
elves, and new to the world outside the
Rimwood of Cormanthyr, he often leaps a little
recklessly at any chance to prove himself. At
heart, he wishes to be a paragon of elven
virtues, but he is at a loss to explain exactly
what those are.

In the wake of the Year of Blue Fire, the mages
of House Sy’Kerys leveled the village of
Quor’tamath in their madness. Their abhorred
men-at-arms rose up and slew their masters, and
led the shamed remnants of the house to their
estates in the eastern Rimwood. There the
majority of the house forswore arcane arts.
Already heavily intermarried into wood elf
families, the House adopted their traditions and
Aelar was born into the first generation of
Sy’Kerys elves of the post-Spellplague era. His
father was a wood elf vassal and the first to turn
against the Sy’Kerys wizards, and his mother a
high lady in the House. From his father he
learned how to use a sword, and from his
mother he learned of the family’s history.
He also learned of the House’s many shames.
An heirloom sword, said to be forged by the
same smiths who created the elfblades, was lost
to the Drow by an ancestor in the Battle of the
Twisted Tower. This dishonor brought down a
curse on Sy’Kerys that follows the family to this
day. The insanities of the Spellplague were
perhaps the most horrible inflicted by this curse,
but they were few of many. His mother told
him of arcane sanctums where evil wizards of
Sy’Kerys created abominations to pursue dark
visions of dominance. She told him also of the
Night of Descent, which saw shadowy
assailants defile the family’s shrines, pushing
the House further toward corruption. She told
him of her secret belief that the torments of the
curse were escalating, and whatever befell the
family next would not only doom Sy’Kerys
forever, but could wreak destruction unlike any
the elves have ever known.
Haunted by these tales, Aelar developed a desire
to clear his family name. He ceaselessly
patrolled the borders of the estates, relentlessly
and cruelly chasing off intruders and
interlopers, until one day, he pursued a band of
humans too far, and slew one of their number.
When the humans were revealed to be refugees
from Drow conquerors, he withdrew, terrified
that the curse was had found him and his family
again. In the dead of night, he dropped a bag of
gold in the humans’ camp, with a note
apologizing for the slaughter, and asking that
they forgive the elves for his crime. He then set
out to follow their path back to the Drow
incursion, where he would avenge his own
crime, and perhaps reclaim the lost sword,
thereby breaking the curse.
